Yukhari Nejili

Yukhari Nejili is a village in the Iravan uezd of the former Iravan governorate, later in the former Zangibasar (Masis) district, and currently in the Ararat province. The provincial centre is located 20 km to the north of the town of Gamarli (Artashat) and at a height of 835 m above sea level. Until the establishment of the Zangibasar district in 1969 the village had been within the former Gamarli district. It was marked on the five-verst map of the Caucasus.

The village was inhabited by 155 Azerbaijanis in 1831, 540 in 1873, 654 in 1886, 791 in 1897, 933 in 1908, 945 in 1914 and 732 Azerbaijanis in 1916. In late 1918 and early 1919 the inhabitants were exposed to the aggression of Armenian armed units and deported from the village. After the establishment of Soviet power in present-day Armenia, the Azerbaijanis who survived were able to return to their ancestral lands. The village was inhabited by 319 Azerbaijanis in 1922, 365 in 1926, and 627 in 1931. In November and December 1988 the Azerbaijanis were deported by the Armenian state from their historical and ethnic teritories.

The toponym was coined on the basis of the word “yukhari” denoting a distictive feature and the name of the Turkic tribe “Najli” (Nejili).

By the decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the Armenian SSR dated 25 January 1978, the village was renamed “Nizami”. According to the law “On the administrative-territorial division of the Republic of Armenia” dated 7 November 1995, it was integrated into the administrative area of the Ararat province.
