Yukhari Aghdan is a village in the Gazakh uezd of the former Yelizavetpol (Ganja) governorate, later in the former Karvansara (Ijevan) district, and currently in the Tavush province. The provincial centre is located 5 km to the southeast of the town of Ijevan (Karvansara), on the bank of the Aghdan River and at a height of 850 m above sea level.
The village was previously inhabited by Azerbaijanis who gradually left it after Armenians had been settled in the region.
The toponym was coined by combining the words “yukhari” denoting a distinctive feature, “agh” meaning “small, low, not tall” and “dan” meaning “a desert, an open space”.
By the decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the Armenian SSR dated 25 May 1967, the village was renamed “Aghdan”, and by decision dated 25 January 1978, renamed “Gandzakar”. According to the law “On the administrative-territorial division of the Republic of Armenia” dated 7 November 1995, it was integrated into the administrative area of the Tavush province.
