Yagublu

Yagublu is a village in the Alexandropol uezd of the former Iravan governorate, later in the former Boyuk Garakilsa (Gugark) district, and currently in the Lori province. It was the centre of the Gugark district which was established in 1964 and abolished in 1995. The provincial centre is located 2 km to the northeast of the town of Vanadzor (Boyuk Garakilsa), near the Pambak River and at a height of 1,325 m above sea level. The village was marked on the five-verst map of the Caucasus.

Along with the Armenians, 43 Azerbaijanis lived in the village in 1897. In 1905–1906 the Azerbaijanis were ousted from the village by Armenian militants. At present, the village is inhabited only by Armenians. The toponym was coined from the ethnonym “Yagublu”. It is an ethnotoponym.

The village was initially renamed “Meghrud” by the decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the Armenian SSR dated 1 April 1945, then “Gugark” on 25 May 1983. It was integrated into the administrative area of the Lori province according to the law “On the administrative-territorial division of the Republic of Armenia” dated 7 November 1995.
