Talin

Talin is a town in the Echmiadzin uezd of the former Iravan governorate, later in the former Talin district, and currently in the Aragatsotn province. The provincial centre lies 48 km to the northwest of the town of Ashtarak, at a height of 1,585 m above sea level. Its name was marked on the five-verst map of the Caucasus. Until 1930 a part of the territory of the district had been within the Echmiadzin uezd of the former Iravan governorate, and the other part within the Alexandropol uezd of the former Iravan governorate. The famous Medieval Talin fortress, which has survived up today, is located there.

The town was originally inhabited by Azerbaijanis, but following the settlement of Armenians from Türkiye according to the Treaty of Adrianople (1829), the population gradually left the town. The Armenians moved from Mush and Sasun provinces of Türkiye were settled in the town.

The toponym was coined by combining the word “tal” used to mean “a willow tree”, “a willow branch” and the word “in” used to mean “a hut, cabin” in Old Turkic. It is a complex toponym formed on the basis of a relief. In official documents in Armenian, the name of the town is given as “Verin Talin”.

By the decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the Armenian SSR dated 25 January 1978, it was renamed “Talin”. According to the law “On the administrative-territorial division of the Republic of Armenia” dated 7 November 1995, it was integrated into the administrative area of the Aragatsotn province.
