Soylan

Soylan is a village in the Sharur-Daralayaz uezd of the former Iravan governorate, later a town in the former Pashali (Azizbeyov, Vayk) district, and currently in the Vayots Dzor province. The provincial centre lies 17 km to the southeast of the town of Keshishkend (Yeghegnadzor), on the left bank of the Arpa River, on the Keshishkend (Yeghegnadzor)–Istisu (Jermuk) road, at a distance of 139 km from the city of Iravan, at a height of 1,300 m above sea level. It is noted as “Soyulan” in “The Iravan Province Review Book” compiled in 1728, and marked as “Soylan” on the five-verst map of the Caucasus. The Armenian and 19th-century Russian sources indicate that the ancient name of the village was “Soylanli”.

The village was inhabited by 58 Azerbaijanis in 1831 and 14 Azerbaijanis in 1897. In the early 20th century the Azerbaijanis were driven out from the village where Armenians were settled. At present, only Armenians live there.

The toponym was coined on the basis of the Turkic tribal name “Soklen” (soylan).

The villahe was renamed “Azizbeyov” by the decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the Armenian SSR dated 12 October 1956, and “Vayk” by decision dated 3 April 1991. According to the law “On the administrative-territorial division of the Republic of Armenia” dated 7 November 1995, it was integrated into the administrative area of the Vayots Dzor province.
