Shirran

Shirran was a village in the territory of the Iravan uezd of the former Iravan governorate, later in the former Gamarli (Artashat) district, in the present Gegharkunik province.

The village was inhabited by 148 Azerbaijanis in 1897, 185 in 1914 and 144 Azerbaijanis in 1916. The Azerbaijanis were attacked and dispersed from their historical and ethnic lands by Armenian armed units in spring 1919, and the Kurds were settled in the village. At present, the village is in ruins.

The toponym was coined on the basis of the word “shirran” meaning in Azerbaijani “a small fall, a fountain, a spring”.
