Sheykh Haji is a village in the Echmiadzin uezd of the former Iravan governorate, later in the former Talin district, and currently in the Aragatsotn province. The provincial centre lies 46 km to the northwest of the town of Ashtarak, at the western foot of Alagoz Mountain, at a height of 2,000 m above sea level. Its name was marked on the five-verst map of the Caucasus.
The village was solely inhabited by Azerbaijanis: 19 in 1831, 233 in 1873, 245 in 1886, 338 in 1897, 337 in 1908, 337 in 1914 and 311 Azerbaijanis in 1916. In 1918 the village was exposed to the agression of Armenian armed units, and massacres were committed against the Azerbaijanis. Armenians were moved from Türkiye and settled in the village. Currently, only Armenians live there. The toponym was coined on the basis of the personal name “Seikh Haji” and means “the village belonging to Sheikh Haji”.
By the decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the Armenian SSR dated 3 January 1935, it was renamed “Shgharshik”.
According to the law “On the administrative-territorial division of the Republic of Armenia” dated 7 November 1995, it was integrated into the administrative area of the Aragatsotn province.
