Sarayurd was a winter pasture located in the territory of the Zangazur uezd of the former Yelizavetpol (Ganja) governorate, later in the former Gafan district, and present-day Syunik province.

The toponym was coined from the word “sara” used in the sense of “a plain, plain field” in Old Turkic and the word “yurd” used in the sense of “a place of residence, settlement” in Azerbaijani to denote “a place of residence, settlement in the plain, field”.
