Persi was a village in the territory of the Echmiadzin uezd of the former Iravan governorate, later in the former Ashtarak district, and present-day Aragatsotn province. It was located 68 km to the northwest of the district centre. The name of the village was noted in “The Iravan Province Review Book”.
The village was inhabited by 76 Azerbaijanis in 1831, 225 in 1873, 229 in 1886, 266 in 1897, 323 in 1908, 345 in 1914, 285 in 1916, 323 in 1918 and 124 Azerbaijanis in 1919. The Azerbaijanis were attacked, massacred or expelled from the village by Armenian armed formations in 1918. The Armenians removed from Türkiye were settled in the village.
The toponym was coined on the basis of the word “par” meaning “a barren land, a steppe”. The word “per” in the Iranian toponyms means “a mountain, a range of mountains”. At present, the name of the village is excluded from the list of settlements.
