Kirkitli

Kirkitli is a mountain in the Novo-Bayazid uezd of the former Iravan governorate, later in the former Chambarak (Krasnoselsk) district, and currently in the Gegharkunik province. It is located to the east of the Tokhluja (Drakhtik) village. The name of the mountain is also known as “Kirkitdi”. It was marked as “Kirkitdagh” on the five-verst map of the Caucasus.

The toponym was coined by adding the suffix “-li” to the word “kirkit” which was formed by combining the word “kir/kır” used in the sense of “a mountain range “, “a hilly place, hill”, “a spine” in Old Turkic and the word “kıt” (kit) used in the sense of “toward, direction”.
