Kichik Sariyal is a village in the Alexandropol uezd of the former Iravan governorate, later in the former Gizil Goch (Gukasyan) district, and currently in the Shirak province. The provincial centre lies 30 km to the north of the town of Gumru, at a height of 1,970 m above sea level. In their works Armenian authors marked the name of the village as “Sariyar”.

The village was originally inhabited by Azerbaijanis who moved to Türkiye following the settlement of Armenians in the region. Armenians were settled in the village in 1828–1832.

The toponym was coined by combining the word “sari”, which implies “large, huge, lofty, high, sharp” and the word “yal”, which means “the top of a high place, steep, the top of a hill”. The word “kichik” (small) in the toponym means a sign of distinctiveness.

By the decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the Armenian SSR dated 4 April 1946, the name of the village was changed to “Pokr Sariar”. According to the law “On the administrative-territorial division of the Republic of Armenia” dated 7 November 1995, it was integrated into the administrative territory of the Shirak province.
