Hunut

Hunut or Hunud is a village in the Zangezur uezd of the former Yelizavetpol (Ganja) governorate, later in the former Gafan district, and currently in the Syunik province. The provincial centre is located 15 km to the northeast of the town of Gapan. The name of the village is also marked as “Hunud”. Following the establishment of the Zangezur uezd in Soviet Armenia on 31 August 1921, the settlement was integrated into the administrative area of Armenia.

The village was initially inhabited by the Azerbaijanis, who gradually left it following the settlement of Armenians in the district.

It is an ethnotoponym coined by adding the plural suffix “-ud” to the ancient Turkic ethnonym “Hun”. In 1988 about 120 Azerbaijanis lived in the village. The population was deported by Armenians in November 1988.
