Gurdgala

Gurdgala is a village in the Borchali uezd of the former Tiflis governorate, later in the former Vorontsovka (Kalinino) district, and currently in the Lori province. It lies at a distance of 11 km from the Kalinino settlement. Earlier it was subordinated to the former Jalaloglu (Stepanavan) district. The village was originally inhabited by Azerbaijanis, and in the early 19th century, following the settlement of the Russian army officers with their families in the village, the local inhabitants gradually left the village.

The toponym was coined by combining the ethnonym “Gurd” of Turkic origin and the word “gala” (a fortress), and means “a village established near a fortress belonging to the Gurd tribe”. The village was renamed “Petrovka” in the 1960s.

According to the law “On the administrative-territorial division of the Republic of Armenia” dated 7 November 1995, it was integrated into the administrative territory of the Lori province.
