Gulujan is a village in the Alexandropol uezd of the former Iravan governorate, later in the former Artik district, and currently in the Shirak province. The provincial centre lies 22 km to the southeast of the town of Gumru, at a height of 1,825 m above sea level. In the Urartu inscription it is marked as “Kuliaini”. It is marked on the five-verst map of the Caucasus.
Along with the Armenians, the village was inhabited by 22 Azerbaijanis in 1831, and 16 Azerbaijanis in 1873. In 1878 the Azerbaijanis were massacred or deported by Armenian armed units. Currently, the village is inhabited by Armenians only.
The toponym was coined on the basis of the ethnonym “Guligan” mentioned in Chinese sources dating back to the 6th-7th centuries. The substitution of the sounds “q-c” (qan ~ can) is typical for the Azerbaijani language. It is manifested itself in the toponym “Azerbaijan” (Adərbadqan- Adirbadqan-Adərbayqan-Azərbaycan).
By the decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the Armenian SSR dated 31 May 1946, the village was renamed “Spandaryan”. According to the law “On the administrative-territorial division of the Republic of Armenia” dated 7 November 1995, it was integrated into the administrative territory of the Shirak province.
