Goyabas

Goyabas was a village in the Sharur-Daralayaz uezd of the former Iravan governorate, later in the former Pashali (Azizbeyov, Vayk) district, and present-day Vayots Dzor province. It was located 15-17 km to the northwest of the settlement of Pashali and on the bank of the Herher River.

The village was solely inhabited by Azerbaijanis: 132 in 1873, 165 in 1886, 202 in 1897, 223 in 1904, 245 in 1914 and 229 Azerbaijanis in 1916. The Azerbaijanis were attacked, massacred or ousted from the village by Armenian armed units in 1918. Later, the village was abolished. At present, it lies in ruins.

The toponym was coined by combining the word “goy” meaning “blue” and the personal name “Abas”.
