Giziljig

Giziljig is a village in the Zangezur uezd of the former Yelizavetpol (Ganja) governorate, later in the former Garakilsa (Sisian) district, and currently in the Syunik province. The provincial centre lies 99 km to the northwest of the town of Gafan, at a height of 1,850 m above sea level. Following the establishment of the Zangezur district in Soviet Armenia on 31 August 1921, the settlement was integrated into the administrative area of Armenia. It is marked on the five-verst map of the Caucasus.

The village was inhabited by 165 Azerbaijanis in 1873, 287 in 1886, 407 in 1897, 450 in 1908 and 441 Azerbaijanis in 1914. In 1918 the Azerbaijanis were deported by Armenian armed forces, being exposed to aggression. Following the establishment of Soviet power in present-day Armenia, the surviving Azerbaijanis managed to return to their native lands. The village was inhabited by 189 Azerbaijanis in 1922, 122 in 1926, 292 in 1931, 441 in 1939, 587 in 1959, 651 in 1979 and 466 Azerbaijanis in 1987. In November 1988, the villagers were expelled from the territory by the Armenian government. Now, the village is inhabited by Armenians.

The toponym was coined by adding the diminutive suffix “-cıq” to the word “gizil”, which denotes the colour of the soil and means “red”.

By decision of the Armenian parliament dated 4 July 2006, the village was renamed “Ishkhanasar”. According to the law “On the administrative-territorial division of the Republic of Armenia” dated 7 November 1995, it was integrated into the administrative area of the Syunik province.
