Gizil Goch is an urban settlement in the Alexandropol uezd of the former Iravan governorate, later in the former Gizil Goch (Gukasyan) district, and currently in the Shirak province. The provincial centre lies 35 km to the north of the town of Gumru, on the Gumru-Akhilkalak highway, at a height of 1,990 m above sea level.

Following the settlement of Armenians in the territory of the Iravan Khanate according to the Treaty of Adrianople (1829), the Azerbaijanis living in the village moved to Türkiye.

The toponym was coined by combining the word “gizil” meaning “red” (a red rock), and the word “kosh” (qoç) meaning “a camp, headquarters”. It is a structurally-compound toponym denoting a relief.

By the decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the Armenian SSR dated 4 January 1938, the village was renamed “Verin Gukasyan”, and by decision dated 12 October 1956, it was renamed “Gukasyan” and on 14 November 1990, it was renamed “Ashosk”. According to the law “On the administrative-territorial division of the Republic of Armenia” dated 7 November 1995, it was integrated into the administrative area of the Shirak province.
