Gisar Khalaj

Gisar Khalaj was a village in the territory of the Zangezur uezd of the former Yelizavetpol (Ganja) governorate, later in the former Gafan district, and present-day Syunik province.

The village was inhabited by 10 Azerbaijanis in 1897. The village was ruined as a result of the massacre committed by Armenian armed units in 1905–1906. The remains of the village are in the present-day village of Khalaj.

The toponym was coined on the basis of the word “gisar/hisar” meaning in Turkish “a fortress in a lowland, a fortified town” and the Turkic tribal name “Khalaj”.
