Gazanbil

Gazanbil is a cave in the Zangezur uezd of the former Yelizavetpol (Ganja) governorate, later in the former Mehri (Meghri) district, and currently in the Syunik province. It is located in the territory of the village of Nuvedi (Nrnadzor), at the top of the mountain above the Gozluchay area, in the depth of 14- 15 m above the ground.

The toponym was coined by combining the ethnonym “Gazan” which was part of the Bulgar Turkic tribe and the word “bil”. The word “bil” comes from the Old Turkic word “belgu” which means “sign”. Herein it means “a stone”. In the 13th–14th-century Bulgar writings the word “belugu” was used to mean “a tombstone”.
