Gapijig was a village in the territory of the Zangezur uezd of the former Yelizavetpol (Ganja) governorate, later in the former Gafan district, and present-day Syunik province. It was located on the right bank of the Okhchu River.
The village was initially inhabited by Azerbaijanis, who gradually left it after the Armenian settlement in the region. The village was inhabited by 12 Azerbaijanis in 1926. At present, the village is in ruins.
The toponym was coined by adding diminutive suffix “-jig” to the word “gapi/ kapu” meaning in Turkic “the cracked upper part of a gorge or ravine”, “a gorge on the mountain slope”.
