Dashnov

Dashnov was a village in the Zangezur uezd of the former Yelizavetpol (Ganja) governorate, later in the former Gafan district, and currently in the Syunik province. Another name for the village was Dashnav. It was located 18 km to the northeast of the town of Gafan. The name of the village was marked on the five-verst map of the Caucasus.

The village was inhabited by 18 Azerbaijanis in 1831, 30 in 1873, 31 in 1886, 30 in 1897 and 39 Azerbaijanis in 1904. The Azerbaijanis were attacked, massacred or expelled from the village by Armenian armed units in 1918. Later, the village was abolished. At present, it lies in ruins.

The toponym was coined by combining the words “dash” meaning “a solid substance, a stone, a rock” in Azerbaijani and “nov” meaning “a semi-circle metal, wooden or stone canal or waterways to carry water off”.
