Chakhirli

Chakhirli is a village in the Novo-Bayazid uezd of the former Iravan governorate, later in the former Basarkechar (Vardenis) district, and currently in the Gegharkunik province. The provincial centre lies 76 km to the southeast of the town of Qavar (Kavar), on the southeastern shore of Lake Goycha, and at a height of 1,950 m above sea level. The village was marked on the five-verst map of the Caucasus.

The village was inhabited only by Azerbaijanis: 212 in 1831, 770 in 1873, 1,020 in 1886, 1,204 in 1897, 1,349 in 1908, 1,653 in 1914, 1,501 in 1916 and 85 Azerbaijanis in 1919. In spring 1918 the Azerbaijanis left their settlement having been exposed to the aggression of Armenian armed men. In September-October 1919 the Azerbaijanis residing in the village were deported from their ancestral land to the last person. In 1915- 1918 the Armenians removed from the Turkish provinces of Mush, Van and Erzurum were settled there. The surviving Azerbaijanis, who had left the village, managed to return to their own land following the establishment of Soviet power in present-day Armenia. The village was inhabited by 679 Azerbaijanis in 1922, 763 in 1926, 975 in 1931, and 1,500 Azerbaijanis in 1987. In November-December 1988 the Azerbaijanis residing in the village were deported from their historical-ethnic land as a result of the policy pursued by the state of Armenia. At present, only Armenians live there.

The toponym “chakhirli” was coined on the basis of a Turkic ethnonym. F. Sumer states that one of the main branches of the Turkic Garagoyunlu tribes was also “Chakurlu”. Thus, the toponym “Chakhirli” was coined on the basis of the ethnonym “Chakhirli/ Chakurlu”, and “Chakhirli” is a phonetic form of the ethnonym “Çakırlı/ Çəkürlü”.

The village was renamed “Sovetakert” By the decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the Armenian SSR dated 25 January 1978. Further, it changed again and became “Khachakhbyur” By the decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the Armenian SSR dated 3 April 1991. According to the law “On the administrative-territorial division of the Republic of Armenia” dated 7 November 1995, it was integrated into the administrative area of the Gegharkunik province.
