Bazarchay

Bazarchay is a village in the Zangezur uezd of the Iravan governorate, later in the former Garakilsa (Sisian) district, and currently in the Syunik province. The provincial centre lies 131 km to the northwest of the town of Gafan, at the upper flow of the Bazarchay River, on the lowland, and at a height of 2,100 m above sea level. The settlement was integrated into the administrative area of Armenia following the establishment of the Zangezur uezd in Soviet Armenia on 31 August 1921. It was marked on the five-verst map of the Caucasus.

The village was inhabited by 469 Azerbaijanis in 1886, 631 in 1897, and 635 Azerbaijanis in 1908. After 1918 the Azerbaijanis were deported from the village where the Armenians removed from abroad were settled. In 1926 three Azerbaijanis lived there, along with the Armenians. In 1929 those Azerbaijanis were also driven out. Presently, only Armenians live there.

The toponym was coined by combining the Turkic tribal name “Bazar” and the word “chay”.

After 1991 the village was renamed “Gorayk”. According to the law “On the administrative-territorial division of the Republic of Armenia” dated 7 November 1995, it was integrated into the administrative area of the Syunik province.
