Avan is a village in the Echmiadzin uezd of the former Iravan governorate, later in the former Ashtarak district, and currently in the Aragatsotn province. The provincial centre lies 15 km to the northwest of the town of Ashtarak, at the foot of Alagoz Mountain, and at a height of 1,680 m above sea level. It was marked in “The Iravan Province Review Book”. That book compiled in 1728 states that its population originates from the Garajalar tribe. The Garajalar is one of the Turkic tribes.
The village was solely inhabited by Azerbaijanis: 104 in 1831, 321 in 1873, 368 in 1886, 465 in 1897, 300 in 1908, 301 in 1914 and 556 Azerbaijanis in 1916. “The Dictionary of the Toponyms of Armenia and Neighbouring Provinces” published in Armenian in 1986 states that in 1831–1916 Armenians lived in that place and the Azerbaijanis were introduced as Armenians. In 1918 the Azerbaijanis, who were the indigenous people of the village, were deported having been exposed to Armenian aggression. In 1916 the Armenians removed from the Turkish provinces of Sasun, Mush, Erzurum, Van and Kars were settled in the village.
The toponym was coined on the basis of the word “ebani” used in the sense of “a country” in the Urartian language.
According to the law “On the administrative-territorial division of the Republic of Armenia” dated 7 November 1995, it was integrated into the administrative area of the Aragatsotn province.
