Ashagi Guluduzu

Ashagi Guluduzu is a village in the Sharur-Daralayaz uezd of the former Iravan governorate, in the former Keshishkend (Yeghegnadzor) district, and currently in the Vayots Dzor province. The provincial centre is located 31 km to the northeast of the town of Keshishkend, on the left bank of the Erdapin River, at a height of 2,050 m above sea level.

The village was solely inhabited by Azerbaijanis- 115 in 1873, 217 in 1886, 151 in 1904, 166 in 1914, 407 in 1916. In 1918 the Azerbaijanis living there were deported having been exposed to Armenian aggression. The surviving Azerbaijanis managed to return to their ancestral village only following the establishment of Soviet power in the present- day Armenian territory. The village was solely inhabited by Azerbaijanis – 142 in 1922, 31 in 1926, 190 in 1931. In 1959 it was merged with the village of “Yukhari Gulluduzu” to form the village of Gulluduzu.

The toponym was coined by combining the word “ashaghi” denoting a distinguishing feature and the word ”gullu” meaning “flowery” in Azerbaijani followed by the word “duz” used in the sense of “without ups and downs, steeps, pits and hills”.

By the decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the Armenian SSR dated 3 April 1991, the village was renamed “Vardahovit”. According to the law “On the administrative-territorial division of the Republic of Armenia” dated 7 November 1995, it was integrated into the administrative area of the Vayots Dzor province.
