Ashaghi Goylasar

Ashaghi Goylasar is a village in the Iravan uezd of the former Iravan governorate, later in the former Gamarli (Artashat) district, and currently in the Ararat province. Another name of the village is “Sufla Qoylasar”. The provincial centre lies 5 km to the southwest of the town of Gamarli, 7 km to the south of the Kharaba Kotanli village, and at a height of 840 m above sea level. Historically, Azerbaijanis resided there. In 1828–1830 Armenians were removed to the village from Iran.

The village was inhabited by five Azerbaijanis in 1831, four in 1873 and 19 Azerbaijanis in 1897. In the early 20th century (1905–1906) the Azerbaijanis were ousted from their land. At present, Armenians live in the village.

The toponym was coined from the word “ashaghi” denoting a distinguishing feature and the distorted form “goylasar” of the words “gala” [a fortress] and “hasar” [a fence]. By the decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the Armenian SSR dated 1 December 1949, the village was renamed “Dimitrov”.

According to the law “On the administrative-territorial division of the Republic of Armenia” dated 7 November 1995, it was integrated into the administrative area of the Ararat province.
