Ashaghi Garabaghlar is a village in the Iravan uezd of the former Iravan governorate, later in the former Vedi (Ararat) district, and currently in the Ararat province. Another name for the village is Chimankend. It had been within the administrative-territorial division of the Garabaghlar district in the present- day Armenian territory until 1950. Following the abolishment of the Garabaghlar district in 1951, its territory was transferred to the subordination of the former Vedi district. The provincial centre lies 26 km to the southeast of the town of Gamarli (Artashat), on the right bank of the Vedi River, and at a height of 1,075 m above sea level. It was mentioned as “Ashaghi Garabagh” in “The Iravan Province Comprehensive Data Book” compiled in 1590, as “Kichik Garabagh” in “The Iravan Province Review Book” compiled in 1728 and marked as “Ashaghi Garabaghlar” on the five-verst map of the Caucasus.
The village was inhabited by 756 Azerbaijanis in 1873, 924 in 1886, 1,260 in 1897, 1,725 in 1904, 1,879 in 1914 and 2,026 Azerbaijanis in 1916. In 1919 the Azerbaijani inhabitants were massacred or ousted from the village, and after 1920 the Armenians removed from Türkiye were settled there. The surviving Azerbaijanis managed to return to the village following the establishment of Soviet power in Armenia. The place was inhabited by 880 Azerbaijanis, 210 Armenians in 1922, 690 Azerbaijanis, 141 Armenians in 1926, 663 Azerbaijanis, 178 Armenians and Kurds in 1931, 4,600 Azerbaijanis 1939. In 1948–1950 the Azerbaijani inhabitants were removed to Azerbaijan, being forcibly driven out from their historical-ehtnic land according to the decision of the USSR Council of Ministers “On the resettlement of collective farmers and other Azerbaijani population from the Armenian SSR to the Kur-Araz lowland of the Azerbaijan SSR” dated 23 December 1947. At present, only Armenians live there.
The toponym was coined on the basis of the word “ashaghi” denoting a distinguishing feature and the ethnonym “Karabaghlar” pertinent to the Kangarli tribe. It is an ethnotoponym.
In 1920, the village was renamed “Chimankend”, later by the decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the Armenian SSR dated 25 January 1978, it was further renamed “Urtsadzor”. According to the law “On the administrative-territorial division of the Republic of Armenia” dated 7 November 1995, it was integrated into the administrative area of the Ararat province.
