Ashaghi Ganlija is a village in the Alexandropol uezd of the former Iravan governorate, later in the former Duzkend (Akhuryan) district, and currently in the Shirak province. The provincial centre lies 10 km to the northwest of the town of Gumru, at a 12 km distance from the Gumru-Amasiya headway, and at a height of 1,650 m above sea level. It had been under the subordination of the district of Gumru (Leninakan) until 1937.
The village was initially inhabited by Azerbaijanis who gradually left it after the Armenians had been settled in the region. The Armenians were removed to this place from the Injalar village of the Kars province of Türkiye in 1828–1829.
The toponym was coined by adding the ending “-ca” to the Turkic ethnonym “qanli”. The word “ashaghi” at the beginning of the toponym denotes a distinguishing feature.
By the decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the Armenian SSR dated 26 April 1946, the village was renamed “Vaghramaberd”. According to the law “On the administrative-territorial division of the Republic of Armenia” dated 7 November 1995, it was integrated into the administrative area of the Shirak province.
