Ashaghi Aghdan is a village in the Gazakh uezd of the Yelizavetpol governorate, later in the former Karvansara (Ijevan) district, and currently in the Tavush province. The provincial centre lies 11 km north of the town of Karvansara, at a height of 650 m above sea level.
The village was initially inhabited by Azerbaijanis, who gradually left the village after Armenians had been settled in the region.
The toponym was coined by combining the Turkish word “agh” meaning “small, low, not very tall” with the word “dan” denoting “a field, desert, open space”.
By the decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the Armenian SSR dated 25 May 1967, the village was renamed “Morut”, and was renamed again “Aknakhbyur” by decision dated 11 November 1970. According to the law “On the administrative-territorial division of the Republic of Armenia” dated 7 November 1995, it was integrated to the administrative area of the Tavush province.
