Aghzibir

Aghzibir is a village in the Novo-Bayazid uezd of the former Iravan governorate, later in the former Kavar (Yeni Bayazid, Kamo) district, and currently in the Gegharkunik province. The provincial centre lies 20 km to the northwest of the town of Kavar, at the shore of Lake Goycha, at a height of 1,930 m above sea level. It was marked on the five-verst map of the Caucasus.

The village was solely inhabited by Azerbaijanis: 108 in 1831, 380 in 1873, 557 in 1886, 696 in 1897, 755 in 1904, 1,068 in 1914 and 917 Azerbaijanis in 1916. In 1918 the residents of the village were driven out having been exposed to massacres by Armenians. The surviving Azerbaijanis managed to return to their native village only after the Soviet power had been established in the present-day Armenian territory. In 1922 the village was inhabited by 327 Azerbaijanis. In 1922–1926 Armenians were settled in the village and the Azerbaijanis were pressured. The village was inhabited by 165 Azerbaijanis and 276 Armenians in 1926, 295 Azerbaijanis, 365 Armenians in 1931, 600 Azerbaijanis in 1947. According to the decision of the USSR Council of Ministers “On the resettlement of collective farmers and other Azerbaijani population from the Armenian SSR to the Kur-Araz lowland of the Azerbaijan SSR” dated 23 December 1947, the Azerbaijanis were deported to Azerbaijan in 1948. Since then only Armenians have been living in the village.

The toponym was formed on the basis of the word “agzibir” meaning “a place with only one exit”, “a small mountain path”. The name of the village was given according to its location. The formation of the toponym is associated with the peninsula, which had access to Lake Goycha only by land.

By the decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the Armenian SSR dated 7 December 1945, the village was renamed “Lchap”. According to the law “On the administrative-territorial division of the Republic of Armenia” dated 7 November 1995, it was integrated into the administrative area of the Gegharkunik province.
