Toparli

Toparli is a village in the Alexandropol uezd of the former Iravan governorate, later in the former Duzkend (Akhuryan) district, and currently in the Shirak province. The provincial centre lies 16 km to the north of the town of Gumru, at a height of 1,650 m above sea level. It is noted as “Taparlı” in the works of Armenian authors. The village had been within the administrative-territorial division of the Gumru (Leninakan) district until 31 December 1937.

The village was originally inhabited by Azerbaijanis, and following the settlement of Armenians from Türkiye according to the Treaty of Adrianople (1829), the population gradually left the village.

The toponym was coined on the basis of the word “toparlı” used to mean “compact”, “bulk”.

By the decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the Armenian SSR dated 7 December 1945, it was renamed “Hatsik”.

According to the law “On the administrative-territorial division of the Republic of Armenia” dated 7 November 1995, it was integrated into the administrative area of the Shirak province.
