Kichik Keyti

Kichik Keyti is a village in the Alexandropol uezd of the Iravan [İrəvan] governorate, later in the former Duzkend (Akhuryan) district, and currently in the Shirak province. The provincial centre lies 14 km to the north of the town of Gumru, at a height of 1,900 m above sea level. Until 1937 it had been subordinated to the former Gumru (Leninakan) district. It was marked on the five-verst map of the Caucasus.

The village was initially inhabited by Azerbaijanis, and following the settlement of Armenians in the area, the population moved to Türkiye.

The toponym was coined by combining the word “kichik” (small), which implies a distinctive feature, with the Turkic word “kat”, which implies “the side of the mountain where the rays of the Sun does not reach”.

By the decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the Armenian SSR dated 26 October 1946, the village was renamed “Lernantsk”, and by decision of 21October 1967, it was renamed “Pokrashen”. According to the law “On the administrative-territorial division of the Republic of Armenia” dated 7 November 1995, it was integrated into the administrative territory of the Shirak province.
