Gamishli is a village in the Echmiadzin uezd of the former Iravan governorate, later in the former Gurdugulu (Hoktemberyan) district, and currently in the Armavir province. The provincial centre lies 13 km to the southeast of the town Serdarabad (Hoktemberyan, Armavir), nearby the Boyuk Garasu River, at a height of 845 m above sea level.
The village was originally inhabited by Azerbaijanis, and following the settlement of Armenians in the region according to the Treaty of Turkmenchay (1828), the population gradually left the village. It was marked on the five-verst map of the Caucasus.
The toponym was coined by adding the suffix “-lı” to the name of the plant “gamish” (reed) used in the Azerbaijani language.
By the decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the Armenian SSR dated 25 January 1978, the village was renamed “Zartonk”. According to the law “On the administrative-territorial division of the Republic of Armenia” dated 7 November 1995, it was integrated into the administrative area of the Armavir province.
