Gilijyatag

Gilijyatag or Birinji Gilijyatag is a village in the Alexandropol uezd of the former Iravan governorate, later in the former Talin district, and currently in the Aragatsotn province. The provincial centre lies 66 km to the northwest of the town of Ashtarak, at a height of 1,575 m above sea level. Another name for the village was Birinji Gilinjyatag. It was marked on the five-verst map of the Caucasus.

The village was originally inhabited by Azerbaijanis, and following the settlement of the Armenians in the area, the population moved to Türkiye. The name of the village was coined by combining the word “birinci” (first) denoting a distinguishing feature in Azerbaijani toponymy, and the word “gilij” in the Azerbaijani language meaning “the top of a high hill”, “the peak, the beginning of the road” followed by the word “yatag” (a bed), which implies “a place where sheep and cattle are kept in autumn and winter”.

By the decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the Armenian SSR dated 12 November 1946, it was renamed “Suser”. According to the law “On the administrative-territorial division of the Republic of Armenia” dated 7 November 1995, it was integrated into the administrative area of the Aragatsotn province.
