The village was solely inhabited by Azerbaijanis -103 in 1922, 88 in 1926, 127 in 1931, 202 in 1939, 148 in 1959 and 253 Azerbaijanis in 1979. In November 1988 all residents of the village were deported from their historical and ethnic homeland. At present, Armenians live there.
The toponym was coined by combining the word “it” reflected in the name of the “Itbarak” tribe mentioned in historical sources and used as an ethnonym and the word “kuren/kuran” (giran) meaning “a temporary shelter for cattle-breeders” in Old Turkic. It is an ethnotoponym.
The villahe was renamed “Gulustan” by the decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the Armenian SSR dated 3 January 1935 and later “Nor Aznaberd” by the decree dated 3 April 1991. According to the law “On the administrative-territorial division of the Republic of Armenia” dated 7 November 1995, it was integrated into the administrative territory of the Vayots Dzor province.
