Yekanlar

Yekanlar is a village in the Alexandropol uezd of the former Iravan governorate, later in the former Artik district, and currently in the Shirak province. The provincial centre is located 23 km to the southeast of the town of Gumru and at a height of 1,900 m above sea level. The name of the village was indicated as “Yeghanlar” and “Yeginlar” in the works of Armenian authors. It was also marked on the five-verst map of the Caucasus.

Until 1828 the village had been solely inhabited by Azerbaijanis. In 1828- 1830 the Armenians from the village of Jamishli of the Kars province and partly from the Sarigamish and Erzurum regions were removed and settled in the village. After the settlement of Armenians in the village, the Azerbaijani inhabitants gradually left their homes.

The toponym was coined on the basis of the tribal name “Yeganlar”.

By the decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the Armenian SSR dated 15 July 1969, the village was renamed “Arevshad”. It was integrated into the administrative area of the Shirak province according to the law “On the administrative-territorial division of the Republic of Armenia” dated 7 November 1995.
