Yayiji

Yayiji is a village in the Novo-Bayazid uezd of the former Iravan governorate, later in the former Yelenovka (Sevan) district, in the present Gegharkunuk province. The provincial centre is located 48 km to the northwest of the town of Kavar (Yeni Bayazid, Kamo), next to the Zangi River, on the shore of Lake Goycha and at a height of 1,750 m above sea level. The name of the village was noted in “The Iravan Province Comprehensive Data Book” and marked on the five- verst map of the Caucasus. In 1829–1830 and in 1915–1920 the Armenians from Maku Province of Iran were removed and settled in the village.

Along with the Armenians, the village was inhabited by 10 Azerbaijanis in 1897. At the beginning of the 20th century, in 1905–1906, the Azerbaijanis were deported by Armenian militants. The name of the settlemt was coined from the ethnonym “Yayiji”, one of the Oghuz tribes.

By the decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the Armenian SSR dated 25 January 1978, the village was renamed “Dzovaber”. According to the law “On the administrative-territorial division of the Republic of Armenia” dated 7 November 1995, it was integrated into the administrative area of the Gegharkunik province.
