Yasovul is a village in the Alexandropol uezd of the former Iravan governorate, in the former Duzkend (Akhurian) district, and currently in the Shirak province. The provincial centre is located 11 km to the northeast of the town of Gumru and at a height of 1,750 m above sea level. The village had been under the subordination of the Gumru (Leninakan) district until 1937. It was noted in “The Iravan Province Comprehensive Data Book”.
The village was previously inhabited by Azerbaijanis, after the Armenians from Türkiye were removed and settled in the village by the Treaty of Adrianople (1829), the Azerbaijanis gradually left the village.
The toponym denotes “a yasavul’s village” being coined from the word “yasavul” meaning “the person who implements Shah’s decree”.
By the decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the Armenian SSR dated 7 December 1945, the village was renamed “Hovuni”. According to the law “On the Administrative-Territorial Division of Armenia” dated 7 November 1995, it was integrated into the administrative territory of the Shirak province.
