Varmaziar or Vermazyar is a village in the Echmiadzin uezd of the former Iravan governorate, later in the former Uchkilsa (Echmiadzin, Vagharshapat) district, and currently in the Armavir province. The provincial centre is located 36 km to the east of the town of Serdarabad (Armavir) and at a height of 853 m above sea level. It was marked on the five-verst map of the Caucasus.
The village was solely inhabited by Azerbaijanis 61 in 1831. In 1828- 1829 the Armenians from Khoy and Salmas provinces of Iran were removed and settled in the village, gradually displacing Azerbaijanis. At present, the village is inhabited only by Armenians.
The toponym was coined by combining the words “var” meaning “a valley, a ravine” in Turkic and “mazar” meaning “a tomb, a pilgrimage, a grave” in Arabic to denote “a village in the valley”.
By the decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of Armenian SSR dated 4 April 1946, the village was renamed “Arevashat”. According to the law “On the administrative-territorial division of the Republic of Armenia” dated 7 November 1995, it was integrated into the administrative territory of the Armavir province of Armenia.
