Uzuntala

Uzuntala is a village in the Gazakh uezd of the former Yelizavetpol (Ganja) governorate, later in the former Karvansara (Ijevan) district, and currently in the Tavush province. The provincial centre is located 17 km to the northeast of the town of Karvansara, and at a height of 500 m above sea level.

The village was previously inhabited by Azerbaijanis, but after the settlement of Armenians in the region, they gradually abandoned the village.

The toponym was coined by combining the word “uzun” meaning in Azerbaijani “big, vast” and the word “tala” meaning “an open place in the forest”.

By the decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of Armenian SSR dated 25 May 1967, the village was initially renamed “Onut”, then “Aygehovit” on 12 February 1969. According to the law “On the Administrative-Territorial Division of Armenia” dated 7 November 1995, it was integrated into the administrative area of the Tavush province.
