Uchunju Garakilsa

Uchunju Garakilsa is a village in the Alexandropol uezd of the former Iravan governorate, in the former Gizil Goch (Gukasian) district, and currently in the Shirak province. The provincial centre is located 39 km to the northeast of the town of Gumru, and at a height of 1,970 m above sea level.

The village was previously inhabited by Azerbaijanis, but after the settlement of Armenians in the region, they gradually abandoned the village.

The name is coined by combining the ordinal number “uchunju” (the third) and the oeconym “Garakilsa”. “Uchunju” is a word denoting a distinctive feature.

By the decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of Armenian SSR dated 3 January 1935, the village was renamed “Dzorashen”. According to the law “On the Administrative-Territorial Division of Armenia” dated 7 November 1995, it was integrated into the administrative area of the Shirak province of Armenia.
