Tepedibi is a village in the Echmiadzin uezd of the former Iravan governorate, later in the former Gurdugulu (Hoktemberyan) district, and currently in the Armavir province. The provincial centre lies 9 km to the south of the town of Serdarabad (Hoktemberyan, Armavir), near the Araz River, at a height of 860 m above sea level. It was marked as “Tepedib” on the five-verst map of the Caucasus.
Armenians were relocated to the village in 1831 from the Surmali and Igdir provinces of Türkiye. Along with the Armenians, the village was inhabited by 17 Azerbaijanis in 1897. In the early 20th century the Azerbaijanis were forced out of the village by Armenian militants. At present, only Armenians live in the village.
The toponym was coined on the basis of the words “tepe” and “dib” used in th sense of “a foot of the mountain” in Azerbaijani to denote “the village at the bottom of the hill”.
By the decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the Armenian SSR dated 4 April 1946, it was renamed “Haykavan”. According to the law “On the administrative-territorial division of the Republic of Armenia” dated 7 November 1995, it was integrated into the administrative area of the Armavir province.
