Tekneli

Tekneli is a village in the Alexandropol uezd of the former Iravan governorate, in the former Gizil Goch Gukasyan district, and currently in the Shirak province. The provincial centre lies 24 km to the north of the town of Gumru, in Ellar valley, at a height of 1,840 m above sea level. It was noted in “The Iravan Province Review Book” dated 1728 as the timar (manor) of Osman Mustafa oghlu, (manor of Osman, the son of Mustafa) with a revenue of 4,000 akchas. It was marked on the five-verst map of the Caucasus.

The toponym was coined on the basis of the Turkic ethnonym “Tekneli” engaged in pottery and stone masonry.

By the decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the Armenian SSR dated 25 January 1978, it was renamed “Goghovit”. According to the law “On the administrative-territorial division of the Republic of Armenia” dated 7 November 1995, it was integrated into the administrative area of the Shirak province.
