Shardere was a village in the territory of the Zangezur uezd of the former Yelizavetpol (Ganja) governorate, later in the former Gafan district, and present-day Syunik province. It was located near the village of Khalaj. The village was inhabited by 59 Azerbaijanis in 1897.

The village was devastated as a result of attacks and massacres committed by Armenian armed units in 1905–1906. At present, it lies in ruins.

The toponym was coined by combining the words “shar” meaning “evil” and “dere” meaning “a valley”.
