Shamsiz was a village in the territory of the Zangezur uezd of the former Yelizavetpol (Ganja) governorate, later in the former Gorus district, and currently in the Syunik province.
The village was inhabited by 124 Azerbaijanis in 1897, 186 in 1914 and 911 in 1916. The Azerbaijanis were attacked, massacred or expelled from the village by Armenian armed formations in 1918. Only after the establishment of Soviet power in present- day Armenia, the surviving Azerbaijanis managed to return to their historical and ethnic lands. The village was inhabited by 54 Azerbaijanis in 1926 and 52 Azerbaijanis in 1931. The village was abolished after the Azerbaijanis had been expelled in the 1940s. At present, it lies in ruins.
The toponym was coined by adding the suffix “-siz” to the tree name “sham”.
