Shahriz is a village in the Novo-Bayazid uezd of the former Iravan governorate, in Derechichak district, later in the former Yelenovka (Sevan) district, and currently in the Gegharkunik province. The provincial centre lies 37 km to the northwest of the town of Kavar (Yeni Bayazid, Kamo), near Lake Goycha, on the Iravan-Sevan road, near the Zangi River, at a height of 1,850 m above sea level. “The Iravan Province Review Book” stated that the village had an annual revenue in the amount of 11,000 akchas. Another name for the village was “Kerimkend”.

 Armenians were moved from the Turkish province of Alashkirt and the Iranian province of Maku and settled there in 1828–1829. The village was inhabited by 441 Azerbaijanis and 86 Armenians in 1831.

By the decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the Armenian SSR dated 26 April 1946, it was renamed “Geghamavan”. According to the law “On the administrative- territorial division of the Republic of Armenia” dated 7 November 1995, it was integrated into the administrative area of the Gegharkunik province.
