Sarigaya

Sarigaya was a village in the territory of the Zangezur uezd of the former Yelizavetpol (Ganja) governorate, later in the former Gafan district, and present-day Syunik province.

The village was inhabited by 50 Azerbaijanis in 1897. The village was devastated as a result of attackes and massacre committed by Armenian armed units in 1905–1906.

The toponym was coined by combining the words “sari” meaning “big, enormous, magnificent, high” in Old Turkic and “gaya” meaning “a mountain, a rock” in Azerbaijani.
