Sarigah is a village in the Gazakh uezd of the former Yelizavetpol (Ganja) governorate, later in the former Karvansara (Ijevan) district, and currently in the Tavush province. The provincial centre lies 19 km to the north of the town of Karvansara, at a height of 800 m above sea level.

The village was originally inhabited by Azerbaijanis, and after the settlement of Armenians there, the Azerbaijani population gradually left the village.

The toponym was coined by combining the word “sari” used in Old Turkic in the meaning of “large, huge, lofty, tall, vertical” and the word “kah/kaha”, in the meaning of “a natural or artificial hollow, cave in a rock, mountain” to denote “a village built near a large cave”. Thus, the second component of the toponym “gah”, is the phonetic variant of the word “kah”, the phonetic substitution “k~g” occurred in this word. This is natural for the Azerbaijani language.

By the decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the Armenian SSR dated 10 May 1951, the village was renamed “Sarigyugh”. According to the law “On the administrative-territorial division of the Republic of Armenia “ dated 7 November 1995, it was integrated into the administrative area of the Tavush province.
