Saribash

Saribash is a village in the Alexandropol uezd of the former Iravan governorate, later in the former Artik district, and currently in the Shirak province. The provincial centre lies 22 km to the south of the town of Gumru, at a height of 1,640 m above sea level. It was marked on the five-verst map of the Caucasus.

The village was originally inhabited by Azerbaijanis, and after the settlement of Armenians in the region, the population gradually left the village. Armenians were settled in the village in 1829–1831 having been removed from the Turkish provinces of Alashkirt and Mush.

The toponym was coined on the basis of the Turkic ethnonym “Saribash”. The Saribash tribe was among the Turkic tribes that came to the north-eastern part of the Kyrgyz steppes in the 13th century. So, the name of the Saribash village is also connected with the ethnonym “Saribash” who arrived in the South Caucasus, including the territory of present-day Armenia.

By the decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the Armenian SSR dated 15 July 1948, the village was renamed “Haykasar”. According to the law “On the administrative-territorial division of the Republic of Armenia” dated 7 November 1995, it was integrated into the administrative territory of the Shirak province.
