Sabunchu is a village in the Iravan uezd of the former Iravan governorate, later in the former Talin district, and currently in the Aragatsotn province. The provincial centre lies at a distance of 57 km from the town of Ashtarak, at a height of 1,570 m above sea level. It is marked on the five-verst map of the Caucasus. The name of the village is also noted as “Sabunchular”.
The village was inhabited by 182 Azerbaijanis in 1897. In 1918 the Azerbaijanis were exposed to the attack of Armenian armed groups and massacred or deported from the village.
The toponym was coined on the basis of the ethnonym “Sabunchu” which is formed by adding the suffix “-chu” to the word “saban” used in the Turkic language to mean “a plough”. The decree issued by the Safavid Shah Sultan Husayn in 1704 states that Sabunchu was one of the 36 Turkic tribes residing near Aran, Mughan and Iravan.
By the decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the Armenian SSR dated 25 January 1978, the village was renamed “Hatsashen”.
According to the law “On the administrative-territorial division of the Republic of Armenia” dated 7 November 1995, it was integrated into the administrative area of the Aragatsotn province.
